What my Mom and Dad did right - Linda B.
I don't know how much their strategy was planned but I think my Mom and Dad did a great job handling the subject of adoption in our house growing up. At some point when I was very little, Mom mentioned that I didn't grow in her belly. When I had questions she answered them honestly and never discounted my birth mother or suggested that she abandoned me. She told me the basic information she had from the adoption agency. I loved to hear the story of when they came to pick me up. How excited they were to get the call that a little girl with brown hair and blue eyes was waiting to meet them. How they fell in love with me at first sight. How their counselor told them I needed some time alone with them but the entire neighborhood was so excited that they threw a big party to welcome me! Really though, it wasn't discussed much at all. They were Mom and Dad and that was that.
